Christmas Ball Ornament Amigurumi pattern

Christmas is a time for joy, togetherness, love, and creativity. One of the most heartwarming traditions of the festive season is decorating the Christmas tree. While store-bought ornaments are readily available, there’s something truly special about personalizing your tree with handmade ornaments.

Day 4: Christmas Ball Ornament

Today, I’ll walk you through creating your own Christmas ball ornament.

Abbreviations

These are standard terms used in crochet and are used throughout the pattern:

R – round/row
sc – single crochet
inc – increase (2 sc in same stitch)
dec – invisible decrease
ch – chain stitch
slst – slip stitch
st (sts) – stitch (stitches)
dc – double crochet
dc2tog – dc 2 together
[…] – repeat instructions within […]
(…) – total number of sts per round

Materials

Before you start, make sure you have all the necessary materials. You will need:

  • Yarn: Cotton 8/4
  • Crochet Hook: Size 2.5 mm
  • Stuffing (fiberfill)
  • Markers, needle and scissors

The pattern

As you follow the pattern, remember to change the color in the slip stitch at the end of each round.

  • For odd rounds (3, 5, 7, …, 13), begin with chain 2. This will count as your first double crochet.
  • For even rounds (4, 6, 8, …, 14), begin with chain 1. This will count as your first single crochet.

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: inc in all, slst in first st (12)
R3: [dc, 2 dc in next st, sc, inc] x 3, slst in ch 2 (18)
R4: [2 sc, inc, 2 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 3, slst in ch 1 (24)
R5: [3 dc, 2 dc in next st, 3 sc, inc] x 3, slst in ch 2 (30)
R6: [4 sc, inc, 4 dc, 2 dc in next st] x 3, slst in ch 1 (36)
R7: [5 dc, 2 dc in next st, 5 sc, inc] x 3, slst in ch 2 (42)
R8: [7 sc, 7 dc] x 3, slst in ch 1 (42)
R9: [7 dc, 7 sc] x 3, slst in ch 2 (42)
R10: [7 sc, 7 dc] x 3, slst in ch 1 (42)
R11: [5 dc, dc2tog, 5 sc, dec] x 3, slst in ch 2 (36)
R12: [4 sc, dec, 4 dc, dc2tog] x 3, slst in ch 1 (30)
R13: [3 dc, dc2tog, 3 sc, dec] x 3, slst in ch 2 (24)
R14: [2 sc, dec, 2 dc, dc2tog] x 3, slst in ch 1 (18)

Once you’ve reached this point, stuff your ornament with fiberfill. Then, continue with the following steps:

R15: [dec, sc] x 6 (12)
R16: dec in all (6)
R17: sc in all (6)

And there you have it! Your very own handmade Christmas ornament! Fasten off your work and admire your beautiful, handmade piece.
