Welcome to Day 8 of our Christmas Ornaments series where we share a new free pattern every day. Today, we’re creating a delightful candy cane ornament which is part of our #XmasAmiCAL.

Day 8: Candy Cane Ornament

This pattern is simple, yet allows a lot of freedom for creativity. So, without further ado, let’s get into it!

Materials

To get started, gather your materials. For this project, you’ll need:

  • Yarn: Cotton 8/4
  • Crochet Hook: Size 2.5 mm
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Markers, needle and scissors

Once you’ve gathered all of your materials, it’s time to dive into the pattern.

Abbreviations (US)

Before we start, let’s get familiar with some abbreviations we’ll be using:

R – round/row
sc – single crochet
inc – increase (2 sc in same stitch)
dec – invisible decrease
ch – chain stitch
slst – slip stitch
st (sts) – stitch (stitches)
[…] – repeat instructions within […]
(…) – total number of sts per round

The Pattern

This is where you can start to get creative with your design. Choose the colors you like and mix them as you prefer! You can make many different variations to create different designs, for example:

  • Even stitches in red, odd stitches in white
  • 4 stitches in red, 2 in white, 4 in red, 2 in white
  • 2 stitches in green, 2 in white, 1 in green, 1 in white, and repeat!

After you’ve decided on your color scheme, follow these steps:

Start with any color you like.

R1: 6 sc in magic ring (6)
R2: inc in all (12)

For the rest of the rounds, use the color combination you chose.

R3-20: sc in all (12)

At this point insert the pipe cleaners. I use 4 pipe cleaners wrapped around each other.

R21-41: dec in all (6)

Close off

Give the cane form by folding one of the ends.

And voila! You now have a beautiful candy cane ornament. The great thing about this pattern is that it’s so versatile – you can switch up the colors and patterns to make each one unique. So let’s get creative and fill our Christmas tree with these adorable handmade ornaments!
